TV Gopalakrishnan and VV Subrahmanyam along with his son VVS Murari present their only current performance of the year at Drive East, showcasing the power of ragas and sound to evoke human emotion. Let music - from stalwarts who shaped the world of Carnatic music as we know it - wash over you, provide respite, and heal you from within during these turbulent times.

The Quarantine Effect

Due to the shut down of international flights in and out of India, VVS Murari has been stuck in San Diego for the last 6 months. His concert will require tech packages sent to both teams in India and the US, and then merged and mastered from both video and audio perspectives to give audiences the full ensemble experience.

Violin Maestro
VVS Murari, a renowned violinist, violist, composer and an educator was born to the illustrious Violin Maestro Prof. VVS. He comes from the great musical lineage of Sri. Muthuswami Dikshithar and Sri. Swathi Tirunal. He had his initial training from his grandfather Vadakkencheri Veeraraghava Bhagavathar, and later on from his legendary father Shri. VV Subrahmanyam (VVS). He also trained under the doyen Padma Vibushan Dr. Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. Murari was also mentored by his mother Janaki VVS, who hails from a family of great connoisseurs of music and arts. Murari's material grandfather, Shankaranarayanan Iyer was noted teacher and a passionate flautist from Kozhikode, Kerala. 

With a musical career spanning over three decades, Murari has a special place in Carnatic music through his aesthetic musical approach and remarkable violin technique, winning the best violinist award from the prestigious The Music Academy Madras for six continuous years. His creativity in spreading Carnatic music knows no bounds: Murari is the founder and director of VVS Foundation, imparting quality music education (in person and online) to students across the world. His novel concept Carnatic Philharmonic Orchestra, combining Indian classical and western classical was premiered at Cleveland Thyagara Festival, Cleveland, Ohio in 2015 and at Phoenix, AZ in 2017 was a roaring success. He has worked to bring acapella into carnatic music, as part of his production "Panchamukhi" which was premiered at Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival, Cleveland, OH 2017.


Violin Maestro ("NaadhaYogi")
A living legend, popularly known as “VVS”, Professor V. V. Subrahmanyam, popularly known as VVS, is a violin artiste, composer, scholar, educator, author, innovator, and inventor. The legendary VVS had his initial training under his father, Vadakkencheri Veeraraghava Bhagavathar. His other gurus were Tripunithura Sri. Narayana Iyer, Chembai Sri. Vaidhyanatha Bhagavathar, Musiri Bha g a v a t h a r, M u s i r i  Sri. Subramanya Iyer, and Padma Vibhushan Dr. Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer.
Both outstanding accompanist and soloist, VVS has accompanied most of the illustrious legends of the past. The caliber of his music is exemplified through a powerful combination of musical purity and aesthetic boxing technique.

VVS was the first Indian violinist to travel to the United States and perform at the United Nations, alongside the great M. S. Subbulakshmi. UNESCO's first South Indian instrumental recording was done by VVS, is a recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi award from the President of India, and also the Kalaimamani award from the government of Tamilnadu.

He has composed, written books, composed for movies, and even created his own ragas.

Mridangam Maestro
TV Gopalakrishnan, winner of the Padma Bhushan award of India, and famously known as TVG hails from a family of musicians spanning over two centuries. His father was a court musician for the Cochin Royal Family. He is one of the rare musicians who is equally proficient in both Carnatic and Hindustani Vocal, Mridangam and violin. Gopalakrishnan started playing the mridangam at the age of four and had his arangetram at the Cochin palace at the age of six. He is one of the seniormost disciples of Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar. Hailed as an innovator of Indian Jazz, TVG has toured all over the world with the legends like George Harrison, Bob Dylan, John Handy, Ravi Shankar, Ustad Alla Rakha, etc. He has also collaborated with drummer/composer Franklin Kiermyer, Don Peake, Seigfried Kutterer and Carola Grey on many occasions. In his career spanning over eight decades, many honors and awards have been bestowed on Dr.TVG.
